1. Overview

RealVR Traveler is a virtual reality player which supports VRML 2.0 files with RealSpace's Image Worlds Specification. The Traveler can display 3D objects, panoramic images, sprites, and QuickTime movies all in the same environment. The Traveler is available either as a plug-in or a stand-alone application for Power Macintosh, Windows 95 or Windows NT platforms. The plug-in version works with either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

2. System Requirements

Before you can use the RealVR Traveler, you will need the follwing equipment:

Processor PowerPC
Operating System MacOS 7.5 of higher. QuickTime 2.1 or higher required for videos and sound. The latest version of QuickTime can be downloaded from:
http://quicktime.apple.com/qt/sw/sw.html
Web Browser Netscape 2.0 or higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer is required to use the RealVR Traveler plugin.
RAM 4 MB of free RAM are required.
Hard Disk 2 MB of free hard disk space are required to install the RealVR Traveler.
Video 256 color display minimum. Thousands of colors recommended for superior quality.

3. Installation

To install the RealVR Traveler plugin, you need to move this plugin to your Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer plugins folder.

The file, 'NetManage Winsock Lib', must be dragged onto the System folder icon, and your Mac should automatically place it in the Extensions folder.

If you are behind a "firewall", you should read the note on firewall.

If possible, you should set your screen color depth to "thousands of colors" for the best performance and quality. You should also give you Netscape of Microsoft browser an extra 2-3 MB of memory (Select the browser icon in the Finder. Choose "Get Info" in the File menu. Change the "Preferred size" in the Get Info dialog box.) so it can run the plugin properly. More memory may be required if you browse high resolution images in the plugin.

Once this is done, just quit and restart your Netscape or MS Explorer, and you're ready to go. A good place to start with lots of RealVR samples is the RealSpace web site at:
http://www.rlspace.com.

The stand-alone Traveler can be used directly without a browser. You only need to put the NetManage Winsock Lib in the Extensions folder. The Traveler reads ".ivr" files, which are RealSpace's extended VRML 2.0 files. Some .ivr files can be founds in the "Demos" folder on the CD.

4. Instructions

Using the RealVR Traveler is very simple. When you encounter a web page with a RealVR scene, just click and drag the mouse in the window to navigate around side to side and up and down. Certain regions in a panorama may be "hot spots". When your mouse is over a hot spot, it will turn into an arrow to let you know you can click in that region. Clicking a hot spot can make you move around in the RealVR space, or it can activate other behaviors in the scene.

There are also some keyboard controls. Pressing the shift or control key will zoom your view in and out. Pressing one of the arrow keys will rotate your view in that direction. Finally, holding down the spacebar will highlight hot spots in the scene so that you can know where you are free to click.
